Couple Finds 65-Year-Old Treasure While Remodeling Their Basement

It's amazing what can just be sitting around in an old house. Every now and then, we come across stories where a family inherits a home from their grandparents and comes across some amazing finds while looking through it.

One such family recently discovered an entire safe filled with rare coins in their grandfather's house, while another learned that their relatives may have encountered an infamous pirate.

Yet sometimes, a house can hold some secrets that aren't passed down through families. Sometimes they're just waiting around until the new owners get the idea to do some renovations and accidentally become archaeologists stumbling upon a treasure trove.

That's exactly what happened to one family who decided to post their one-in-a-million discovery on Imgur. And it might be one of the best surprise hauls we've ever seen.

The couple's project started out simply enough.

Their house was built in the late '40s, so they wanted to spruce it up. This meant peeling back the walls and taking out the ceiling.

At first, all they uncovered were some weird chalk doodles.

Things got a little more challenging when the time came to remove the ceiling.

It was caked in about 1/4 inch of dust, so that made renovations pretty unpleasant when it started flying. But it would all be worth it soon enough.

When the dust settled, they found this box nestled next to a pipe.

Once they found it, they decided to documentthe surprise for Imgur. By this point, they didn't yet know what was inside.  

The box was pretty dusty, so they brought it outside.

Based on the weight of the box, they figured there wouldn't be anything like coins or gold bars inside. At best, they thought they might find some old, rare sports cards.

They were on the right track, but they never would have expected the haul they ended up with.

After removing the shoe string tied around it, they finally opened the box.

So what was resting inside for all this time?

Whatever it was, somebody was serious about protecting it.

Our homeowners found three packages wrapped in what looked like wax paper. Also, you can ignore the banana. That wasn't in there.

The bottom of the box was lined with newspaper dating back to 1951.

In addition to protecting the packages, that also likely tells us when the box was first hidden.

So what was this person so keen on protecting?

When our heroes looked closer, the packages started to reveal their secrets.

It looked like each one had a big bundle of cash inside!

They were right. When they opened the first package, it was full of $20 bills.

This discovery only got better for them since the other two packages respectively carried $50  and $100 bills.

While going through their haul, they noticed some of the bills were rarer than others.

Some were dated between 1928 and 1934 and had gold certificates displayed on them. So they knew their next move was to get their new collection appraised to see how much they were really worth.

Also, they contacted an estate lawyer to sort out whether the cash was legally theirs.

But the excitement wasn't over for them yet. There were more secrets in that basement waiting to be revealed. 

About a week after the discovery, our renovators found another box.

They could see there was cash through a small vent in the box and this box was twice as heavy as the last one.

This time, the box was positively stuffed.

This box was almost entirely filled with twenties and some more rare bills were lurking among them.

So how much was all of this worth?

Once the appraisals were finished, they found out the whole kit was worth about $45,000.

Not only that, but 10 of the rarer bills were worth four times their face value. And the best part?

Their estate lawyer friend told them that the cash was legally all theirs. They plan to use the money to help pay off their mortgage.
