Short on some money? Thinking of trying your luck on a gameshow?
Well, maybe you shouldn't...First off, why does your get-rich-quick scheme involve a gameshow? Can't you just get into pyramid schemes like everybody else? But I'll level with you. I've thought about going onto a gameshow to win me some cool stuff. Specifically, The Price Is Right because Bob Barker was a beast. But I never thought about a couple things.
So before you go on one listen to this...
So The Price is Right has been one of America's defining game shows since it first aired on September 4, 1972 with Bob Barker.
Man, Barker was always dapper AF. And The Price is Right models aren't bad either, but they ain't no Barker.
For literally decades, the show has been the morning staple for millions of millions of Americans. They won trips, cars, fridges, golf clubs, recreation items and even boats!
And obviously, we chip in as armchair coaches, yelling at contestants who just get the price so WRONG.
In 2007, Bob retired and Drew Carey took over the show encouraging us "To help control the pet population. Get your pets spayed or neutered."
So the prizes, cars and trips keep on coming....
But THIS former contestant has a MASSIVE bone to pick with the show after she won...
This is Aurora De Lucia, she runs Aurora's Blog and currently edits for The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore.
Back in 2013, Aurora went to the show in California and actually got called up as a contestant!
She won $33,000 worth of prizes! She won a Mazda2 compact car, a pool table, camcorders and a shuffleboard table.
She said it happened so fast: "It’s a whirlwind, they kind of shove you around, and then you are suddenly in the parking lot, saying, ‘I just played Plinko.'"
But she forgot to account for one thing...
And it's what makes The Price Is Right VASTLY different than other game shows...
“Yeah, you don’t just drive off the back lot with the car like I thought the entire time I was growing up,” Schwartz said to the A.V. Club.
“After the show, you fill out some paperwork and basically sign your life away. You say that you’re going to PAY THE TAXES on it,” she added.
“If you win in California, you have to actually pay the California state income tax ahead of time.”
"They’re just like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to win a bunch of stuff,’ and then they’re going to have to forfeit their prizes because they can’t afford to pay the taxes on them."
"I think a lot of people don’t understand what they’re getting themselves into."
Before she even saw her car, she had to shell out $2,500 to get it shipped from LA to her house in Reno, Nevada.
She had to use the $1,200 she got from the game to pay it off. Lucky her!
