12 Easy Moving Hacks Everyone Should Know

SHARE
I love change, which is why I was so happy when I found out my family was moving into a new home. We were moving to a new area, which meant new adventures. I was very excited, to say the least. But the one thing that killed my joy was packing. Ugh. I hate packing. Such a buzzkill.

As bad as I thought packing was, it was unpacking that was even worse. So many things were broken, lost, and spilled. It also took me forever to find all my stuff because I was so disorganized about packing them up. I became so exhausted halfway through the move that I ended up throwing my things into random boxes. Not the smarted thing I have done, but my inner laziness took over.

I wish I had spent more time properly packing my things. If I did, I wouldn't have had to deal with the mess and clutter that was waiting for me at my new home. If you are planning on moving, I don't want what happened to me happen to you. Here is a list of easy moving hacks that will make your move so much smoother.

1. Cords

Packing up electronics is the worst part of moving. It takes forever! Before you unplug any cords, attach a piece of masking tape to each one. Write the name of the equipment the cord belongs to, and you'll be able to set your electronics up a lot faster! Check out #12 to find out about another cord hack.

2. Silverware

Don't injure yourself while moving pointy knives and forks. Protect yourself and your silverware by wrapping your silverware holder with plastic wrap. Once you get to your new home, all your cutlery will be in its proper place. No fuss!

3. Clothes

The last time I moved, I took my clothes off the hangers and then I stuffed them into garbage bags. This was a bad idea because I had to hang them up again when I got to my new house. I think I mentioned earlier how lazy I am, so this was not a fun task at all! Do not waste your time like me and please follow this hack. While your clothes are still on the hangers, stuff them into garbage bags. Your clothes are all together and they're ready to be hung up. Sweet!

4. Padding

Use a pillow or your stuffed animals to pad your fragile items. Stuffed animals were our friends then, and they're our friends now! So helpful!

5. Clutter free

Organize yourself from the start! Grab four boxes and label them keep, donate or sell, recycle, and trash, and throw your belongings in whatever one they go into. I wish I did this hack when I moved because it would have saved so much time.

6. Boxes

Don't strain your back while lifting up boxes. Cut upside-down triangles on the sides of your box, and you got yourself handles. This makes lifting it up so much easier.

7. Spills

Prevent your spices from spilling by placing plastic wrap over the opening of the container. This hack works for shampoo and conditioner bottles, too!

8. Plates

While packing your plates, place a foam plate in between each one. This is a great way to prevent them from breaking. So smart!

9. Packing plates

I really don't want you to break any plates, so here's another awesome way to pack them up. Wrap your plates up in paper and place them vertically in a box.

10. Color code

When I was moving boxes into my new home, I didn't know which box went where. They all looked alike! To avoid any confusion, stick a piece of green duct tape to a cardboard box and then put all your kitchen stuff in it. Then, on a sheet of paper, tape down a piece of that same green duct tape and write down that the box with the green tape has your kitchen belongings in it. Buy a bunch of differently-colored tapes and do this with other boxes! So easy.

11. Glasses

This hack may sound odd, but hear me out: stuff your fragile glasses in clean socks. This actually protects them really well!

12. Organization

Don't just throw all your cords into one box! It can get pretty messy. Label your cords with masking tape (like in hack #1) and then place them in toilet paper rolls. Finding them just got a whole lot easier!
