We have all had that dreaded "Uh oh" moment after we flush the toilet and realize it's not going down, but up! The pit of your stomach drops and all you're wondering is, "Can I unclog this, or am I going to have to call the plumber again?" Before you freak out, take a deep breath because it's going to be alright! Your instinct might be to grab a plunger and see if you can attempt to take on this challenge. Before you do that, there might be another solution to the problem. This solution is a lot less tiring and wont have you huffing and puffing when pushing the plunger down. All you need are a few simple things and a little bit of patience. Find out how you can DIY a clogged toilet on your own!

What You Need

  • Towel
  • Bucket
  • Dish Liquid
  • Hot water
Step 1

You don't want toilet water all over the floor! So it's better to be safe than sorry. Start off by laying a towel around the toilet so it can catch any toilet water that overflows.

Step 2

Squeeze a cup of dish liquid directly into the toilet bowl. The dish soap will sink to the bottom of the bowl and lubricate whatever is causing the toilet to clog.

Step 3

Add in as much hot water as you can into a bucket and pour that water into the toilet. Doing this lends a helping hand to the dish soap and allows it to do its job: lubricating the pipes.

Step 4

Read a book, watch a show, or do some chores. Whatever you choose to do, just kill 20 minutes of your time. Let the dish liquid and hot water join forces and work their magic.

Step 5

The water level in the toilet has lowered. Before you think that it's time to flush, fill your bucket up with more hot water and dump it down the toilet once again. This will restart the water cycle and push whatever is clogging the toilet further down the pipes.

Step 6

Give the toilet a flush and you're done!
