Six Months After The Olympics, Rio's Brand New Facilities Are Already In Shambles

The Olympic Games are a special occasion, an international agreement that every four years, the world will come together to determine who's the fastest, who can jump the highest, who can lift the most, and who can throw the farthest. It's a competition that brings out the best in us and inspires future generations to push their limits. At least that's what it's supposed to do. But, sadly, we haven't been leaving the best impression for future generations lately. Rio's current state of affairs only underscores that, and it's hard to see.

In the summer of 2016, Rio welcomed the world with beautiful new facilities for the Olympics.

However, just six months later, many of the new venues, built at great cost and under considerable controversy, are in shambles.

With the nation mired in a terrible recession, the venues' owners haven't been able to maintain the facilities — and it shows.

Vandals have hit them hard, looking for anything of value, and Maracana Stadium, the crown jewel of the Rio Olympics, has had the power cut off because the bills haven't been paid. Ceiling tiles, copper wire, and stadium seats have all been looted.

It's heartbreaking to see something that so much money and hard work went into fall apart so quickly.

These buildings were supposed to benefit the locals for generations, but now it's hard to see them ever being used again.
