Artist Creates Incredible Animals Out Of Old CDs

SHARE
Just the other day I was cleaning some boxes out of a cupboard and discovered an old binder full of CDs. Anyone who was into digital music during the short time between the invention of writable blank CDs and the first iPod probably has one of these binders, too. Pages of plastic sleeves with titles written across the discs in Sharpie, a time capsule of your (questionable) music tastes at that moment. The only way to take your MP3s on the go was to burn them to a disc. And man, did I have a thing for boy band pop in that era. Yeesh!

Nowadays with music stored on our phones and unlimited streaming services, what do you do with all those old discs? Sean E. Avery uses them as the medium for incredible art.

Look at this orangutan! Holy cow — er, primate!

The eyes on this husky puppy are so expressive. I swear my dog has given me that same look when I've got some pizza he wants me to share.

His process is fairly simple: he uses kitchen shears to cut up the CDs, then hot glues the shards to a wire mesh frame of the animal he's creating.

Panda!

My favorites are his birds, especially the hummingbirds. They catch the light so beautifully!
